Ford 351M Engine Overview

When the 351 Cleveland stopped being made after the 1974 model year, Ford needed another engine in that size range because the 351 Windsor couldn’t make enough.

Ford took the 400 engine’s tall-deck block and turned it into a 351 cubic inch (5.8 L) engine by replacing the crankshaft with a shorter 3.5 in (89 mm) stroke crankshaft.

This crankshaft was different from a 351C because it used the 400 V8’s larger 3.0 in (76 mm) main bearing journals.

So that it could use the same connecting rods as the 400, the 351M has pistons with a higher compression height to make up for the shorter stroke.

When the 351M used the longer connecting rod from the 400, the ratio of connecting rod to stroke was 1.88:1, which was higher than the ratio of 1.65:1 for the 351C and 400.

The 351M shared all of its major parts with the 400, except for the pistons and crankshaft. It also used the large bellhousing style of the 385 Series.

The 351M was only ever made with a 2-barrel carburetor and 2V cylinder heads with open chambers and small ports.

For the 1975 model year, 351M engines started to be made. Blocks were made at the Michigan Casting Center or the Cleveland Foundry.

Ford’s last pushrod V8 block was the 351M, which was made until the 7.3-liter “Godzilla” engine for Super Duty trucks was made available in 2020.
