We want to give you accurate information, so when we look into the Ford 351M Engine, we only use official sources.
This updated article tells you everything you need to know about the Ford 351M Engine.
Ford 351M Engine Overview
When the 351 Cleveland stopped being made after the 1974 model year, Ford needed another engine in that size range because the 351 Windsor couldn’t make enough.
Ford took the 400 engine’s tall-deck block and turned it into a 351 cubic inch (5.8 L) engine by replacing the crankshaft with a shorter 3.5 in (89 mm) stroke crankshaft.
This crankshaft was different from a 351C because it used the 400 V8’s larger 3.0 in (76 mm) main bearing journals.
So that it could use the same connecting rods as the 400, the 351M has pistons with a higher compression height to make up for the shorter stroke.
When the 351M used the longer connecting rod from the 400, the ratio of connecting rod to stroke was 1.88:1, which was higher than the ratio of 1.65:1 for the 351C and 400.
The 351M shared all of its major parts with the 400, except for the pistons and crankshaft. It also used the large bellhousing style of the 385 Series.
The 351M was only ever made with a 2-barrel carburetor and 2V cylinder heads with open chambers and small ports.
For the 1975 model year, 351M engines started to be made. Blocks were made at the Michigan Casting Center or the Cleveland Foundry.
Ford’s last pushrod V8 block was the 351M, which was made until the 7.3-liter “Godzilla” engine for Super Duty trucks was made available in 2020.

How do I identify a 351M engine?
The 351M engine is about the size of a car’s engine. The 351M engine is a small but powerful engine that is used in many cars. This engine is also called the 400 engine or an engine in the 400 series.
Ford 351M Engine Specs
The Ford 351m engine is a lot like the 351 Cleveland, which is one of its competitors. Even though they share some parts, the Ford 351m has better specs in every way.
Its stroke is 1/2 inch, or 12.7 mm, which is longer than the famous Cleveland 351m’s stroke. It makes it the Ford pushrod V8 engine with the longest stroke. The Ford 351m has a “square” shape and a stroke and bore of 4 inches (102 mm).
If you’ve heard different things about the engine specs, you can look at them and decide for yourself:
|Engine Family||Ford 335|
|Max boost||28-30 psi|
|Max power RPM’s||4100 RPM|
|Max torque RPM’s||3200 RPM|
|Ignition||6-12 degree BTDC|
|Engine Oil Capacity||7 Quarts|
The size of the Ford 351m engine is so good that it has never had a problem with detonation. On the other hand, all similar models had to deal with this problem at least once and release an update for it.
The Ford 351m has never had detonation because the compression ratio is low, the piston is big (15cc), and the timing of the spark plugs is slow. Here is a list of the sizes of the Ford 351m engine:
|Nominal Size of Main Bearing||3-inch or around 77 mm|
|Deck Height||261.5 mm or 10.3-inch|
|Ratio between Rod and Stroke||1.65: 1|
|Rod Lenght||6.58-inch or 167.11 mm|
Is The Ford 400 A Good Engine?
All of Ford’s big block models were getting old at the time, so the 351m engine was made to replace them.
The design and structure came from Cleveland 351, which was used by their engineering team to build it. But they have made an engine that is better and has more torque and power.
When you want to know how good an engine is, the best way to find out is to look at what other people have said about it. At the moment, the 351m engine has an overall rating of 4.6 stars.
People gave it 4.5 stars for how it looks, 4.4 stars for how comfortable it is, 4.6 stars for how well the engine works, 4.1 stars for how well it uses gas, and 4.5 stars for how well it is worth the money.
So, let’s look at a few more features and benefits of the 351m engine to show that it is what it is:
To make room for the 4-inch stroke, the deck was raised by 1.09 inches. The 400 engine doesn’t use a lot of gas, and it doesn’t make a lot of noise. The rate of emissions can go up by as much as 400%, which is a big number for any engine.
Both mechanical and thermal loads change over time. This is what makes it possible for the engine to make a lot of torque.
This engine worked as well as it could because it was made with high-quality parts. It has everything that a good engine needs and works better than its rivals.
Ford 351M Engine Weight
The ship weight of the 351M long block create engine I bought was 600 lbs. Some of that was the box it came in and other things.
How much HP does a 351M have?
Since the 1980s, Ford cars have had the 351M engine, which has four cylinders. The 400 engine, which is a V6, has taken its place.
The 351M came out in 1978, and the 400 finally took its place in 1987. The 351M’s engine was 3.5 litres and made 95 horsepower, while the 400’s engine was 4 litres and made 125 horsepower.
The 350 could be bought with either a 351M or a 350 engine, but after that, you could only get a 400 engine.
