BMW M52B20 Engine

The BMW M52B20 engine is a 2.0-liter (1,991cc, 121.5cu-in), straight-six, four-stroke cycle, naturally aspirated gasoline motor from the BMW M52 family. From 1994 to 1998, the engine was produced at Munich Plant (Munich in, Germany).

Cast-aluminum alloy block and Nikasil-coated cylinder liners are the highlights of the M52B20 engine. The aluminum cylinder head features four valves per piston (24 total) and two chain-driven overhead camshafts (DOHC).

It features a Siemens MS41.0, DME (Digital Motor Electronics), VANOS (Variable Valve Timing System) from BMW, and a distributorless ignition with individual ignition coils per cylinder.

ADVERTISEMENTS

The cylinder bore and stroke of the piston are respectively 80.0 mm (3.15in) and 66.0mm (2.6in). The compression ratio rating is 11.0: 1. The BMW M52B20 engine produced 150 PS (1110 kW;148 HP) at 5,900 RPM of maximum horsepower and 193 N*m (19.4 Kg*m, 140 ft*lb at 4,200 RPM of peak torque).

BMW M52B20 Engine Specs

The M52B20 engine is a 2-liter inline 6-cylinder engine. This engine was first released in 1994. It is part of the M52 series, including M52B25, HTML52B25, and M52B28 engines.

It replaced the popular M50B20 engine. The cylinder block is entirely made of aluminum alloy, with a Nikasil coating on the bore-liners. New connecting rods and pistons were added to the engine (the length is now 145mm).

BMW M52B20 Engine Problems & Reliability

The engine is free from any specific problems, but it does have the same issues as the M52 series.

ADVERTISEMENTS
  • Overheating:  Heat is a problem in the M52B28 engine. Overheating can cause cylinder heads to explode.
  • Oil usage: An engine’s oil rings are unreliable and can use a lot of oil when damaged.
  • Ignition: Blockage of hydraulic tappets/lifters could cause ignition problems. The ECU will shut off the ignition for cylinders with partially closed valves.

The M52B28’s design is more refined. It has a shorter engine life than M50 engines. There are specific common faults in all M52 engines.

Disadvantages of the M52B20 engine

Overheating is a characteristic of the M52B20 engine. This can cause problems with the cylinder heads. Check the condition of your radiator if the motor is running hot.

It may need to be cleaned. It is a good idea to blow through the cooling system to remove air pockets. Check the thermostat, pump, and radiator cap.

Check the condition of the piston rings, cylinder walls, and other components when there is a lot of oil consumption. Sometimes, it is enough to replace the rings.

A nikasil motor lining is necessary if the cylinder walls become damaged. Also, check the crankcase ventilation valve.

It is essential to replace hydraulic lifters that have become fouled if misfires are in your ignition. Check to see if your Vanos has worn out and if the engine is rumbling, stalling, rpm floatings, and power drops. A repair kit is used to make repairs.

BMW M52B20 Engine

The M52B20 is equipped with a displacement of 1,991 cubic centimeters (121 cu inches) and a compression ratio of 11.0:1. It has a maximum power output of 150 horsepower (110 kW) at 5900 rpm and an output of 140 pounds (187 Nm) at 4200 rpm. For a full review, please check this YouTube video Here.

BMW M52B20 Engine FAQs

Is the BMW M52 engine good?

The M52 engines are powerful. They even won Engine of the Year for a few years. They aren’t as strong as the Euro S50 motors in the M3, designed explicitly for motorsport.

What is the difference between M50 and M52 engine?

The M50 block is more durable because it is made of steel. The M52 block is made from Aluminium. If it heats up a few times, it will melt. The M50 can handle up to 500hp with standard internals.

How much HP can a M52 block handle?

I recommend a maximum of 350 horsepower. The M54/M52 engine is an aluminum block. This means it must have a reinforced Athena top gasket, ARP bolts, and a minimum of two (2) bolts. 2.5L engine. It must be noted that other engines have produced power as high as 450 horsepower.

What is the most reliable V8 BMW?

This engine is available in the 5 Series and 7 Series models. It is known for its reliability and high performance.

Are M52 Pistons forged?

High-performance pistons are forged from high-performance metals for street and racing use. Molibden-coated piston skirt made of 4032-T6. Each set includes rings and HD series pins.
