Hyundai KIA G6BA 2.7L Engine

From 1999 through 2012, a Korean company built the 2.7-litre V6 Hyundai G6BA engine, which was used in the luxury trims of the Sonata, Magentis, Santa Fe, and Tucson.

This power plant also came in a gas-powered variant, designated L6BA.

ADVERTISEMENTS

To replace the G6AV engine, which was a 24-valve copy of the 2.5-litre Mitsubishi 6G73, Hyundai introduced its own V6 unit in 1999.

There are some important differences, such as an aluminium cylinder block with a cooling jacket and intake camshafts that are turned by a belt while the exhaust camshafts are connected to them by a chain.

Hyundai KIA G6BA 2.7L Engine Problems & Reliability

The swirl flaps of the geometry change system are in the intake manifold, and their bolts tend to come loose and fall right into the engine combustion chamber.

ADVERTISEMENTS

This is the only weak point of an otherwise reliable and plentiful power unit.

A thick timing belt on this engine can go the distance beyond the 60,000 kilometres that are recommended, but it is frequently ruined by a not-so-reliable hydraulic tensioner or oiling due to a leak.

If the belt skips, the engine won’t start, and if it breaks, the valves will be bent.

The oil burner is another common gripe of those whose vehicles have such engines.

Around the 200-thousand-kilometre mark, you may notice a slight but steadily increasing lubricant use.

In most cases, the problem is due to a hardened valve stem seal or a stuck ring.

The hydraulic lifters, crankshaft pulley, sensors, and high-voltage wiring are all potential areas of failure in the unit.

Also, the throttle, idle speed controller, or injectors could be dirty, which would make the engine speed change all the time.
