Toyota 22R-E (2.4 L, SOHC) EFI Engine Specs, Review & Service Data

Toyota 22R-E Engine Specs

The Toyota 22R-E is a 2.4 L, 144.38 cu·in (2,366 cc) straight-four 4-stroke natural aspirated gasoline engine from Toyota R-family. Toyota Motor Corporation manufactured the engine since 1983 to 1995.

The Toyota 22R-E engine delivered from 106 PS (78 kW; 105 HP) at 4,800 rpm to 114 PS (84 kW; 113 HP) at 4,800 rpm of maximum horsepower and from 185 N·m (18.9 kg·m, 136 ft·lb) at 2,800 rpm to 190 N·m (19.4 kg·m, 140 ft·lb) at 3,600 rpm of peak torque.

The Toyota 22R-E engine features a cast-iron block and aluminum cylinder head, two valves per Cylinder (8 in total) and a single overhead camshaft (SOHC).

The Toyota 22R-E engine has an electronic fuel injection system and an ignition system with a mechanical distributor.

The Toyota 22R-E engine compression ratio rating is 9.0:1. Cylinder bore, and piston stroke are 92.0 mm (3.62 in) and 89.0 mm (3.5 in), respectively.

In 1985, the 22R engine was redesigned, but many parts from the newer 22R-E (such as the block, pistons, cover, cylinder head, timing chain, water, and oil pumps) are incompatible with those from the older pre-1985 engine.

The breakdown of the Toyota 22R-E engine code is as follows:

  • 22 – 22 generation engine
  • R – Engine family
  • E – Multi-Point Fuel Injection
