ADVERTISEMENTS

The cast-iron cylinder block, aluminium head with two camshafts (timing chain drive), variable-geometry intake manifold, and distributed injection system all come standard on the Toyota 2.7 2TR-FE engine.

Because hydraulic compensators are available, it is not necessary to go through the trouble of changing the clearance in the valve mechanism.

After being modified in 2015, the 2TR-FE now features a Dual VVT-i variable valve timing system (before, phase shifters were only installed at the intake) with a compression ratio of 10.2:1.

The 2TR-FE engine is among Toyota’s most dependable options due to its tried-and-true design and proven parts.

ADVERTISEMENTS

With regular maintenance, regular oil changes, and the correct viscosity lubricants, the maintenance interval between major repairs can be extended to 500,000 kilometres or more.

Toyota 2TR-FE 2.7L Engine Specs, Problems & Reliability

  • If properly maintained, the engine almost never stops working.
  • In 2008, engineers found and corrected the source of oil leakage at the front of the crankshaft.
  • The 3RZ cylinder block with two balance shafts was used for the new 2TR engine, while the cylinder head was modified.
  • This unit utilizes a VVTi intake camshaft with a hydraulic lift and variable valve timing;
  • A new timing chain has been installed. Both the electronic throttle body and plastic intake manifold are unique to the 2TR-FE. The entire control system has been redesigned.
  • The 3RZ’s power output is increased by around 10 hp, the vehicle’s low-end traction is enhanced, and fuel consumption is decreased.
  • The 2TR’s compression ratio was raised to 10.2 in 2015, and it has been equipped with a variable valve timing system on both Dual-VVTi camshafts since then.
  • The TR series features not only the 2.7-liter engine but also the younger 2-liter 1TR engine.
  • Like its forerunners, this bike is quite dependable despite its intricate design.
  • Prior to 2008, the 2TR’s primary flaw and ailment was a faulty front crankshaft oil seal, which was easily remedied by installing a revised design;
  • The 2TR is also distinct from others in that the automatic gearbox causes it to vibrate more noticeably when idling slowly in cold weather. The problem can be fixed by just changing the box’s oil.
  • Use the manufacturer-recommended engine oil in your 2TR-FE and keep it well-maintained with premium fuel to get the most out of it.
