This article, which has been updated, has all the information you require about the Toyota 2NZ-FE 1.3L Engine.

The 2NZ-FE is the smallest of Toyota’s NZ family of gasoline inline four-cylinder engines at 1.3 litres. Since 1999, this powertrain has been standard in the Toyota Yaris/Echo, Porte, and other models in Toyota’s subcompact lineup.

Toyota 2NZ-FE 1.3L Engine

The 2NZ is quite similar to its smaller displacement sibling, the 1NZ-FE. The 2NZ-FE was recognized as the International Engine of the Year in the 1.0- to 1.4-litre class in 2000.

The 1.3L engine is based on the 1NZ and features an open-deck aluminium cylinder block with thin cast-iron liners. In order to decrease the engine’s cubic capacity, a new forged steel crankshaft with a stroke of 73.5 mm (2.89 in) was installed.

The compression ratio is maintained by making the 1NZ engine block smaller than the 2NZ engine block. In all other respects, the 1NZ-FE and 2NZ-FE are virtually indistinguishable.

Low-friction pistons, forged steel connecting rods, and a crankshaft offset of 12 mm all contribute to improved efficiency (LFA).

An aluminium 16-valve cylinder head with double overhead chain-driven camshafts is mounted on top of the engine block. Intake camshafts with a VVT system allow for adaptable valve timing (VVT-i).

Toyota 2NZ-FE 1.3L Engine Problems & Reliability

It’s hardly surprising that issues with 1NZ and 2NZ engines are similar. Oil leaks, excessive oil consumption beyond 150,000 kilometres, an unreliable timing chain, unsteady idling, and other difficulties are common. The 1NZ-FE difficulties provide more context for these questions.

Torque and power are two areas where the 1NZ engine falls short. It’s safe to assume that a tiny sedan like the Toyota Corolla lacks any semblance of dynamics if you can still do basic maneuvers in a subcompact hatchback powered by a 1.3-litre 1NZ engine. An engine with a 2NZ-FE rarely makes it past 125,000 miles (200,000 km) of use.
