Ford Maverick Overview

Even though it doesn’t look like a workhorse, the Ford Maverick is a pickup that can hold its own next to the Ranger and the F-150.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Its unique design and surprising usefulness make it a worthy addition. Standard is a fuel-efficient hybrid system with front-wheel drive.

Optional are a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive.

The Maverick can carry more than enough supplies for a weekend of home improvements, and it can be set up to pull up to 4000 pounds.

It has the same platform as the Bronco Sport SUV. It has four doors and a pretty roomy interior with a number of clever storage options.

The only other compact pickup truck that can compete with the Maverick is the Hyundai Santa Cruz.

This truck can tow more and has more luxury features than the Maverick, but it costs more and has a smaller bed.

Ford Maverick Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Ford Maverick Engine

ADVERTISEMENTS

Instead of making the Bronco Sport’s turbocharged three-cylinder engine the standard engine for the Maverick, Ford has made a hybrid engine the standard engine.

All trims come with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that works with an electric motor to make a total of 191 horsepower.

This set-up only has front-wheel drive and an automatic transmission that keeps changing speeds.

There is also a non-hybrid powertrain with a 250-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

With this powertrain, all-wheel drive is an option. With the optional turbo four, the Maverick feels very quick on the road.

At our test track, it took 5.9 seconds to get to 60 mph. The hybrid powertrain isn’t as quick.

In our tests, it took 7.7 seconds to reach 60 mph, but it still gets the job done.

The Maverick’s suspension is pretty stiff, so it can carry a lot of weight. This makes the ride a little rough over broken pavement.

When we test the Maverick on our test track, we’ll add the results to this story.

FAQ – Ford Maverick Engine

Ford Maverick Engine

▶ What engine is in a Ford Maverick?

Powertrain. All Maverick models come with an e-CVT gearbox that is part of the hybrid engine.

When paired with an electric motor, a 2.5-liter Duratec Atkinson cycle inline-four gasoline engine makes 191 hp (194 PS; 142 kW) at 5600 rpm.

▶ What is Maverick EcoBoost engine?

What We Checked Out. Our test Maverick EcoBoost was an XLT model with front-wheel drive.

It has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 250 horsepower and 277 pounds-feet of torque.

The gas-only engine is paired with a traditional eight-speed automatic transmission.

▶ How long will Ford Maverick engine last?

If you take care of your Ford Maverick, it should last for 200,000 miles.

Based on the average number of miles driven each year, a new Maverick model could last up to 14 years.

▶ How does the Ford Maverick hybrid engine work?

The standard engine in the Maverick is a 2.5L inline-four that is paired with an ECVT transmission.

The ECVT is driven by gears instead of belts like a traditional CVT. It has one motor that runs the truck on its own and another that starts the engine and acts as a generator to charge the batteries on board.
