VW/Audi 2.5 R5 TDI PD Engine

The 2.5 5 liters in-line 5-cylinder TDI engine incorporating pump injection technology introduces the new generation of diesel engines with five cylinders.

The main development goal was to use this engine on a range of configurations (transverse and longitudinal mount) to get a higher power density.

The engine is used to power the Transporter 2004 with 130 and outputs of 174 HP in addition to The Touareg, which has 1174 horsepower of output.

The machines used in the Transporter 2004 and Touareg differ predominantly in the transverse and longitudinal adjustments to the mounting.

VW/Audi 2.5 R5 TDI PD Engine Specs

2.5 R5 TDI PD 2.5 R5 TDI PD is the next generation of 2.5-liter diesel engine inline following it was the 2.5 R5 TDI. The engine has been preserved in its important dimensions and configurations. However, it’s the brand’s most recent development.

The engine is made entirely out of aluminum alloy. It is a brand new model of cylinder block constructed of a high-strength aluminum alloy.

It is coated with plasma, which means the cylinders do not come with a liner. In this instance, it’s almost impossible to repair this engine block.

Transporter 2004 has the starter placed on the gearbox’s side, meaning that the cylinder block does not have the space to mount these blocks instead of the engine blocks designed for VW Touareg. The crankshaft is fitted with an integrated vibration damper.

VW/Audi 2.5 R5 TDI PD Engine Problems & Reliability

These 2.5-liter TDI PD engines are less robust than the older version. It is, however, an excellent engine and highly durable if you perform the maintenance properly (400-500k unaffected miles).

However, certain people have had cylinder head and camshaft issues, usually due to applying the incorrect oil.

Specific engines had rubber seals wear out slots inside the fuel chambers around the injector, releasing diesel fuel into the oil and causing a pressure drop.

Modifications

AXD – 131 hp (96 kW) at 3500rpm, 250 lb-ft (340 Nm) at 1900 rpm. This engine fits into VW Transporter 2004.

BAC – this engine has the same specs as AXE but it is designed for VW Touareg – longitudinal mounting.

AXE – 174 hp (128 kW) at 3500rpm, 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) at 1900 rpm. This engine fits into VW Transporter 2004+

Are VW PD engines reliable?

They’re cheap and solid and provide a decent quantity of energy. For many, they’d be regarded as reasonably decent. The one and only “PD” engine with an issue was the “PPD170,” not an accurate PD in the sense of. The plethora of BXE engines affected by failing con rods suggests otherwise.

Do PD engines burn oil?

All diesel engines burn oil

When did they stop making PD engines?

Most manufacturers stopped producing non-DPF vehicles in the middle of the summer of 2010. Therefore, any cars registered in December after the fact could have been considered older stock. We owned one of those mid ’90s, early 1.9 90PS TDis on the Golf.
