Plymouth is buried in a hole

On May 28, 1957, a Plymouth car was lowered into a pre-dug hole outside the Tulsa County Courthouse. The car was placed on a concrete platform that could withstand a nuclear explosion.

Prior to the lowering of the car, various items that were common at the time were placed inside it. These items included packs of cigarettes, cans of Schlitz beer, and bottles of Oklahoma crude oil.

Once the items were placed inside the Plymouth, a car cover was put over it, and a heavy cement safe was placed on top.

Excavated 50 years later

On June 15, 2007, Plymouth, a car that had been buried for 50 years, was dug up. The preparations to unearth the car had been made 18 months prior to the event.

9,000 people, including tourists, media, and citizens, attended the event. Unfortunately, the area where the car was buried was not waterproofed, leading to water damage that caused the car’s color to change in a very bad way.

Moreover, there were some engineering errors at the time of the burial that allowed water to enter and damage the car.
